Poncili Creación Performance in Sideways to the Sun
2019
Moody Center for the Arts, Houston, TX
Interested in how my installation might serve as a springboard for other artists, I invited artist collective Poncili Creación to create new work in response to my installation.
Poncili creación is a collective helmed by brothers Pablo and Efrain Del Hierro working at the intersection of puppetry, sculpture, activism, and performance. Poncili held a week-long sequence of workshops with community participants and myself, building large-scale, wearable puppets inspired by Sideways to the Sun. Their residency culminated in a performance bringing together puppets, sound, and movement in situ with my work. The puppets were performed by Poncili and a troupe of 9 students from Rice University and the University of Houston.
Performers: Efrain and Pablo Del Hierro, Sophie Parker, Nonie Hilliard, Al Green, Nicky Meaux, Jazzy Rosales, Minoti Kale, Donaldo Almazan, Kara Coonrod, and Angelo Ragan. Music by: Andrew Keller and Joe Wilson
This project was made possible with funding from the Moody Center for the Arts and the Visual and Dramatic Arts Department at Rice University
